Obituary

Barbara Jo Petry

In the dusk of February 19, 2005, Barbara Jo Petry, aka Barbara Burnett Smith tragically lost her life. In this loss, Gary W. Petry mourns a loving wife; W. D. Smith, her son of Friendswood, TX, and his wife, Martie, loses a wonderful mother and mother-in-law. Tyler Morgan Smith and Shelby Kaitlyn Smith, her two precious grandchildren, will forever cherish the memories of their doting grandmother, “Busia.” Gary’s daughters, Tammy Gonzales, Cassandra May and Teri Petry and grandchildren Josh and Mitch May, Regan Pena, Ariana, Katlin and David Gonzales and Elizabeth Petry will all miss the joy of Barbara’s presence. She is also survived by Bruce and Delphine Burnett, her brother and sister-in-law of Soccorro, New Mexico. Other close survivors are, Doris Bailey of Aptos, CA., Dennis and Doris Allmen of San Diego. CA. She leaves behind, also, her love of creative writing, the books which she authored, her many writing friends … and her dearly beloved pets.

Getting to know Barbara was one of those rare and special gifts that, if you're lucky, happen maybe once or twice in a lifetime. She bubbled with energy and an enthusiasm that was contagious, and beneath her sparkling surface lay a well of caring and generosity that she was quick to tap for anyone – or any creature – in need. A talented and dedicated writer, Barbara was wise, witty, spunky, and kind – very much like the heroines of her wonderful mysteries, through which she touched countless hearts. Barbara may be gone, but her spirit lives on, not just in the hearts of those who loved her, but in her words.

The ripples of this dynamic, vibrant and light giving life, well lived, touched hearts ~ whether through her books or personally. Barbara’s positive and gleeful outlook on life permeated her friendships, her books, and her professional relationships. To her, every single cloud had an absolutely perfect and beautiful silver lining. That was Barbara.
