A Snow Angel in Alaska for Barbara

She was bouncing and bubbly and exuberant to boot,

She was warm and caring and way, too cute.

She was happy and hardworking and so full of life,

She was a grandma, and mother, and a loving wife.

We were friends who agreed, we were both high maintenance,

Spoiled by tall dark handsome husbands with lots of patience.

Each year she and Gary would come see my play

And try to solve the mystery and brush the red herrings away.

We’d laugh and warn our husbands they’d better beware us,

We thought so much alike that at times it would scare us.

But this year there’ll be an empty chair on the front row,

In honor of Barbara, who would have solved it, I know.

She was a sister writer, sister thinker and a sister in crime

And I thank the good Lord, she was like a sister of mine,

And behind me in Alaska under the Northern Lights

I will leave flowers and a snow angel in celebration of her life.

Though it may not be pretty, it was on a hillside under the full moon and the Northern lights

amidst the sound of happy sled dogs barking in the night,

outside of Fairbanks, Alaska on February 24, 2005

with love from Barbara Vance.
